Type I Hypervisor for Desktops

Alliance logoThere's a lot of hype over virtualization today, and with good reason.  In particular, many businesses are taking a strong look at virtual desktops.  Even with the virtual desktop, virtual application, and desktop provisioning systems we have today, there is still some flexibility missing.  What if you need offline access to a virtual desktop?  What about the major performance hit you get when you run a Type II hypervisor like VMware Workstation or Microsoft Virtual PC?

Citrix and Intel recently announced a major initiative to create a Type I hypervisor for desktops.  Imagine being able to run multiple operating systems, simultaneously, in offline mode, and still have those images centrally managed and delivered.  Sound too good to be true?  Check it out here:

Virtualization News

"Gartner Inc. has ranked virtualization as the No. 1 strategic technology for next year, not for its "tremendously obvious" ability to virtualize servers, but for its increasing capability to virtualize just about everything else in a data center."

"With VMware View 3, IT organizations can "decouple" a desktop from specific physical devices or locations to create a personalized view of a user's desktop, applications, and data - called "myView" - that is securely accessible from almost any device, at any time."

Emineo Group welcomes new team members!

Emineo Group recently added two new members to our team.

Doug Thomsen

Doug is our newest Enterprise Solutions Architect.  Doug recently worked for First National Bank of Omaha as one of the lead architects for their VMware platform.  Doug also recently received VMware's vExpert award.

Jeff Newton

Jeff is our new SMB Solutions Administrator.  Having recently worked for a managed services company in Sioux City, Jeff has come back to Omaha to help us serve our small business customers.

XenServer - Fast and Free

There have been some very interesting developments in the server virtualization world in the last month.

First is the announcement that Citrix XenServer is free.  Let me clarify this a bit.  Citrix has always had a free version of XenServer, but it did not have enterprise functionality.  There is now a single edition of XenServer, and it includes enterprise functionality such as SAN storage integration and live motion capabilities.

Citrix then took some functionality and created a separate product toolset called Citrix Essentials, which can be used with Citrix XenServer or Microsoft Hyper-V technologies.  The Essentials product contains features such as high availability, integrated storage management, dynamic provisioning services, and automated lab management.

The second item of significant interest is a third-party experiment performed by VirtualizationReview.com, where VMware, Citrix XenServer, and Microsoft Hyper-V were tested side-by-side.  The findings?  "XenServer Roars Off the Line."  Before you start thinking this test was skewed towards XenServer, know that the testing was performed by a confirmed VMware guy.

If you still haven't embraced server virtualization for your company, you're missing out on a tremendous savings to your total cost of ownership.  Whether VMware, XenServer, or Hyper-V, virtualization is here to stay, and is still on the rise.  Gartner predicts that Worldwide Virtualization Software Revenue Will Increase 43% in 2009.

eCommerce and PCI Compliance

If your eCommerce site accepts credit cards, you must be PCI-DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) compliant.  One of the requirements for PCI-DSS that is of specific interest is requirement 6.6, which states:

"Ensure that all Web-facing applications are protected against known attacks by applying either of the following methods:

  1. Having all custom application code reviewed for common vulnerabilities by an organization that specializes in application security.
  2. Installing an application layer firewall in front of Web-facing applications."

Emineo Group can help you evaluate these two options.  We partner with an application security company, and we sell and support Citrix Application Firewall (part of Citrix NetScaler).  Click here for a white paper titled "Citrix Solutions for Complying with PCI-DSS."

New Features in XenApp

Many new features are being added to Citrix XenApp, including server provisioning, user profile management, load testing, and more.  Licensing is also being changed, so that many features are available to users offline without using additional licenses; think single sign-on and cached applications.

Upcoming Events

The next meeting for CUGO will be Wednesday, April 1st.  More details will be coming soon.  Keep checking the web site for details, and be sure to register, as space will be limited.

This customer-focused event will not only showcase today's hottest technologies, you'll have the opportunity to learn about the benefits of cloud computing, including cost reduction, flexibility, and reliability.  May 4-7, 2009.

VMworld 2009
"Attend VMworld 2009 to hear about the latest industry trends and learn how virtualization can help maximize your organization's current and future IT investments."  August 31 - September 3, 2009.

Increase the Stability of Your XenApp Farm

One of the most important things you do with your XenApp farm is make sure all your servers are configured exactly the same.  This prevents troubleshooting issues on a per-server basis.  However, keeping servers consistent is a big administrative chore, and despite everyone's best efforts, per-server issues still arise.

Citrix Provisioning Server for Datacenters can address these issues by allowing you to create a single "gold" image of your XenApp environment, and then stream that image to as many physical or virtual XenApp servers as you want.

Click here to see a video demonstration of Provisioning Server.

Why Virtualize?

Gartner says that virtualization will be the highest-impact trend in infrastructure and operations through 2012.  Some businesses are still struggling with why to virtualize.  Virtualization brings very real savings and return on investment when you look at data center optimization and making the data center "green".  Virtualization also helps make business continuity and disaster recovery more affordable than ever.  Emineo Group provides Virtualization Assessments to help businesses determine the benefits and return on investment of virtualization.

IT'S NO URBAN LEGEND: XENAPP SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVES USER ACCESS TO MULTIMEDIA APPS

Attend our seminar to learn how you can optimize delivery of your multimedia apps.

It’s a common misconception that Citrix XenAppTM (which you may know as MetaFrame or Presentation Server) can’t handle rich multimedia content and graphic intensive applications.

The truth is, XenApp can actually improve user access to streaming multimedia apps by using client-side resources to decompress and render audio, video and graphics without a high-speed network. It even reduces server and network loads while enhancing the user experience. And by adding Citrix Branch RepeaterTM to your XenApp environment, you can also ensure high performance and fast delivery of apps to your remote and branch offices.

Attend our seminar on July 8th 2009 to learn how you can:

Dramatically improve user access to graphics-intensive apps
Boost productivity for mobile and branch users
Reduce overall cost of app management up to 50%
